The above monument lists the veterans buried in West Street Cemetery. There is an issue - James Ross is listed on the monument, and there is a military headstone in the cemetery (see below). James M. Ross (1839-1900), 1st Vermont Cavalry, is actually buried in New Vermont Cemetery, Bolton, NY, where he was born and died. The headstone in West Street Cemetery was ordered based on a Dr. James Ross (1809-1880), of Rutland, who was not actually a veteran. The soldier came from New York and enlisted in Rutland, which caused some confusion in the 1950s when the headstone was erroneously ordered and set in the cemetery.  (Courtesy of Jennifer Snoots) |
