Pre-War: Carpenter, entered Norwich University with the Class of 1846. He was a cadet for two years before going off to fight in Mexico, Mexican war, entered US Army 1855.
War Service:
May 1862 Col. of 11th Missouri, Iuka, Corinth (w,c), escaped and recaptured, Nov 1862 appointed BG Vols, commanded 2nd Bde/3rd Divn/XV Corps in Vicksburg campaign, Jackson, served in Red River campaign, Ft De Russy, Yellow Bayou, Aug 1864 promoted MG Vols, commanded 11st Divn/XVII Corps in March to the Sea, Carolinas campaign.
Post War: Army service, commanded Dept of Louisiana.
2nd Lieutenant, 1st Infantry, U.S.A., 1855; 1st Lieutenant, 13 Mar 57; captain, 9 Sep 61; Colonel 11th Mo. Vols., 3 May 62; Brigadier-General of Volunteers, 29 Nov 62; Major-General of Volunteers, 12 Aug 64; Brevet Major-General, U.S.A., 13 Mar 65, for gallant and meritorious service during the war; Colonel, 39th Infantry, U.S.A., 28 Jul 66.
