He moved to Hiram, Ohio at a young age and became a close friend of James Garfield. Graduated from West Point at age 25. Fought in Texas and was severely wounded in a fight with Comanches in 1859. Became Colonel of 41st Ohio and commanded a brigade in Buell’s Army on the second day at Shiloh. He fought at Perryville, Stone’s River, Tullahoma, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Atlanta, the March to the Sea and in the Carolinas. He commanded the 2nd Division of the XV Corps and in May 1865, led the Corps in the Grand Review in Washington, DC. After the war, he returned to the regular army and was appointed Colonel of the 38th Infantry and later BG in the Signal Corps. Hazen died in Washington on January 16, 1887 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
