Rutland Daily Herald, October 10, 1928:
John Carroll, 83, the last Civil war veteran who enlisted from West Rutland, died at his home on the Castleton road last evening about 9:30 o'clock. Mr. Carroll, who had passed all his life in West Rutland, served in Company C, 10th Vermont regiment.He is survived by his wife; a son, James Carroll; a daughter, Miss Mary Carroll; and a sister, Mrs. Richard Duffy of Rutland.
