The Davis Brothers, Company H

Lensey Davis was born 15 Nov. 1802 in Warren, NY the son of Luther and Susanna (Rounds) Davis. He married 16 Feb. 1826 in Clarendon, VT, Esther Shedd, born 21 July 1810 in Plymouth, VT, the daughter of Samuel and Esther (French) Shedd. A few weeks after their marriage they removed with her parents to Bolton, NY, which afterwards remained their home. They inherited strong constitutions and great vitality and longevity, reared a family of twelve children on their farm and lived together in wedlock nearly sixty years. Esther died 27 Oct 1884 in Bolton, NY. Lensey died 4 Apr 1894 in Moreau, NY in his ninety-second year, retaining remarkable vigor to his very advanced age.

Of their 7 sons alive at the time of the Civil War, five chose to serve their country as Union soldiers. Adoniram Judson Davis had married and removed to Michigan, where he enlisted in the 1st Michigan Volunteers. He was killed 30 Aug 1862 at the second battle of Bull Run. William Henry Harrison Davis served in the 22nd NY Vols. The subjects of this sketch are the three remaining brothers, Flavius J. W., Solon D., and Don C. whom all joined the 1st Vermont Cavalry. Don Carlos enlisted first, and may have influenced his brothers and a cousin, James M. Ross, to enlist also. They traveled from their home in Bolton, NY to Clarendon, VT.
Flavius Josephus Warren Davis enlisted 17 Oct 1861 at Clarendon, VT in Company H of the 1st Vermont Cavalry for the term of three years. He appears on the Company Descriptive List as age 31, height 5 feet 10 inches, with a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and grey hair. He gave his occupation as a bookkeeper. He was initially mustered in as a 2nd Sargeant but was reduced in ranks to a private 10 Dec 1861 and detailed to the Quarter Master Dept. 12 Dec 1861. On 1 May 1862 at Harrisonburg, VA he was transferred to Company E. He was discharged 6 Sept 1862 at Washington, D.C. by order of the war department. He died 27 Feb. 1866 in Aspen Shade, MO. He was married 19 Feb 1852 in Glens Falls, NY to Eliza Ann Heist b. 9 July 1834, the daughter of Alexander and Eliza Ann (Hammond) Heist. Their children were:

Solon D. Davis enlisted 17 Oct 1861 at Clarendon, VT in Company H of the 1st Vermont Cavalry for the term of three years. He appears on the Company Descriptive List as age 25, height 5 feet 11 inches, with a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and black hair. He gave his occupation as carpenter. He was present with this company until 21 June 1862, when he was detached to the Brig. Quarter Master Department under Lt. F. T. Huntoon. He remained with the Q.M. Dept. until 12 Apr 1863. On 26 July 1863, he was detailed to go to Washington, D.C. for horses. He was listed as missing in action, taken prisoner, 11 Oct 1863 at Brandy Station, VA. He was held in the prison pens at Richmond, Belle Isle, Andersonville and Savannah until 18 Nov 1864 when he was released. He served as a Quartermaster's clerk at Charles Town, WV until June 1865. He later settled in Harrisonville, MO. He was married 17 Nov 1865 in Castleton, VT to Mrs. Eliza (Collins) Obrian b. 23 Mar 1839, the widow of William Obrian. She died 17 Dec 1867.

Don Carlos Davis enlisted 5 Oct 1861 at Clarendon, VT in Company H of the 1st Vermont Cavalry for the term of three years. He appears on the Company Descriptive List as age 23, height 5 foot 9 ½ inches, with a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and dark brown hair. He gave his occupation as farmer. He was present with this company until 21 June 1862, when he was detached to the Brig. Quarter Master Department under Lt. F. T. Huntoon. He remained with the Q.M. Dept. until 12 Apr 1863. He was present with this company for the remainder of his term and served as clerk from January thru June 1864. He was discharged 19 Nov 1864 by expiration of his term of service. He was at the battle of Gettysburg and was in the charge in which General Farnsworth was killed. After the war, he removed to Harrisonville, MO where he resided several years, but eventually he returned to Glens Falls, NY. He was married 3 July 1866 to Lillian Orilla Davis b. 8 May 1840 d. 9 Apr 1874 in Harrisonville, MO.
