John Gilman, a veteran of the Civil war and for many years an active member of the local Grand Army post, died at his home in Prosper Sunday evening, aged 79 years. Mr. Gilman was born in Canaan, N. H., learned the trade of stone mason, and came to Woodstock when a young man. November 1, 1858, he married Miss Elvira K. Clapp of Woodstock, who survives him, and he leaves five children: John P., Clarence E., Ernest W., and Jessie W., of Woodstock, and Forrest H., of Denver, Colo. Miss Gilman lives at the homestead with her mother. Mr. Gilman served with Co. B, 1st Vt. Regt, from May until August 1861, and in the 6th regiment with Companies D. G. and C. He was a very successful pension attorney for many years and was quite an influence in local politics at one time. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, Rev. W. A. Leonard officiating.
