Joseph C. Hawkins

Rutland Daily Herald, May 30, 1899:

Wallingford - Joseph Caleb Hawkins, 72, a lifelong resident of Wallingford, died Saturday. He was the oldest of a family of nine children and is survived by two. He was first married to Martha Emerson of Boston, Mass., and after her death to Caroline Griswold of Wallingford. He had but one child, that by his first wife, Mrs. Sarah Jane Dawson, with whom he had lived for the past 14 years. She, with two grandchildren, are the only descendants of his own family. By occupation he was a farmer. With a younger brother he enlisted in the war of the rebellion and was in the 14th Vermont regiment. He served the full time of his enlistment and was in the battle of Gettysburg. The funeral was at the Dawson home yesterday at 2 o'clock.
