Biography

SECOND LIEUTENANT CHESTER W. SEARLES was sergeant in Company G, and acting with the ambulance corps was promoted January 22, 1863, and assigned to Company I, which company well knowing that there was plenty of good timber for commissioned offices in its own ranks did not give the young lieutenant a very warn reception or very cordial treatment. But by strict attention to business he soon gained their confidence and after commanding the Company through the battle of Gettysburg he always had a warm place in the hearts of the members of Company I. He has followed railroad mail service and farming since the war, and has for a long time resided at Berkshire, Vt.
