MOLLUS

Introduction

The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, usually known by its acronym MOLLUS, was the first national postwar veterans group created after the Civil War. Membership was restricted to regular and volunteer commissioned officers of the United States Army, Navy, Marine Corps who had served in the Civil War. First-born sons were allowed to join as "Second Class" members, and first-born sons of deceased members were "First Class Hereditary Companions." MOLLUS was much smaller than the Grand Army of the Republic, but in some ways much more powerful, due to the number of influential members.
