Israel Bush Richardson (1815-1862) was a native of Fairfax, an 1841 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), and a veteran of the Mexican War. He resigned from the army in 1855, and was appointed Colonel, 2nd Michigan Infantry at the start of the Civil War. He was promoted Brigadier General within a month, on 5/17/1861, commanded a brigade at First Bull Run, promoted to Major General, USV, 7/4/62, and was in command of 1st Division, 2nd Army Corps at Antietam when he was mortally wounded in front of "Bloody Lane." He died of his wounds 11/3/1862.
