Vermont Civil War Monuments
"In the centre of almost every village you will find a monument erected in memory of soldiers who were in the Civil War, and around the base of these monuments you will find carved, 'Bull Run, Chickamauga, Antietam, Wilderness, Gettysburg,' etc., places where the boys from those towns fought." (Harold W. Slocum, The Story of Vermont, (New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926), p. 126)Not nearly every town, but there are a lot of them.....
Monuments in VermontMost of these are Civil War-specific; some honor veterans from multiple wars, and a few are just for veterans in general. If there are multiple markers for different wars, we are just documenting the Civil War markers.
