Adjutant and Inspector General Reports

1865 Report
Appendix C

Official Reports

XII. LETTER OF BRIG. GEN. STEPHEN THOMAS, TRANSMITTING MONTHLY RECORD OF EIGHTH REGIMENT VERMONT VOLUNTEERS, FROM FEBRUARY 18, 1862, TO JANUARY 1, 1865.

West Fairlee, Sept. 19, 1865.

Peter T. Washburn,
Adjutant and Inspector General.

General--I herewith enclose you short extracts from the monthly history of the 8th Vt. Vols., from the time of its being mustered into the U. S. service to the first day of January, 1865.--the month in which I was mustered out of the service, in consequence of the expiration of my term of service. I have not been able to prepare this satisfactorily to myself, for want of time. * * * * and, until I received your letter last evening, I had determined not to sent it; but I see that the credit the regiment has won, if any, is the property of the State, and future generations will care more about the history of the past four years than we do.

I am, very respectfully, your obedient servant,

STEPHEN THOMAS.
