They were called, derisively, paper-collar soldiers. They spent 8 1/2 of their 9 months' careers in the forts south of Washington, with only minor skirmishes against Mosby to their credit. They might have faded into history, unknown, but today these Vermonters are on "The Road To Gettysburg!"
