DIARY OF OLIVER A. BROWNE
Co. K, 15th Regiment, Vermont Volunteer Militia
Camp Vermont, November 13th, 1862

3rd. Mrs. Stannard went out to-day, horse back for the first time. Capt. Hill got blowed up by the General for making too much noise in camp.

4th. Rained this morning. Has blown off quite warm.

5th. Nothing new from guard.

6th. Report that Hooker has crossed the Rappahannock.

7th. No more news from Hooker or Grant.

8th. Very windy and dusty. Nothing of importance has occurred in the past eight days.

13th. Hooker’s army is on the move. They are at Rappahannock station. 14th and 11th Army Corps has gone to Centerville.

15th. The whole of Hooker’s Army has passed through this place. Perhaps onother Bull Run on the road.

16th. The 6th A. C. is at the station. Brigade is doing well. The 15th (15th RegVI ) are the rear Guard of Hooker’s Army.

17th. Very hot and dusty. Baggage on the road all day.

18th. Hot and dry. Had one good shower this afternoon.

19th. All quiet. Have heard nothing from Hooker’s Army.

20th. Rained. The first we have had for some time.

21st. There was very heavy firing at Gainsville all day, about 8 miles from this place. Have no particulars yet.

22nd. Quite warm. Saw several boys from the old brigade to-day.

24th. Marched to Centerville. Rained.

25th. Got to the London and Hamp. R. R.

26th. Not the 6th army corps at Gilford Station. Very good day to march.

27th. Hard day.

28th. Reached Frederick City.

July 1st. Encamped at Emmetsburg. One man died on the road. The battle of Gettysburg fought.

July 2nd. The battle continued. My first engagement.

July 3rd. Fought one of the bloodiest battles that was ever heard of in the annals of war. Gen. Stannard was wounded in the last charge.

July 4th. Laid on the battle field all day. Buried the dead.

July 5th. Marched all day.
