May 31, 1864Dear Friend Carrie
I received your kined and welcom letter in due time and was glad to hear from you and to know you are well.
I am well as usale and am ancious for November to come for my time is out then, and if I do get out of this scrape I will ceep out, and not get catch again.
Orange has got back to the Regment he came back yesterday I don't know bet he will think I am trying to cut him for I belive he is wrighting to you but I guess it will be all wright in the end don't you think so
As for news thare is none that would intress you very much it is Fighting wether now days thare is a hard Fight to day the Cannan roars like Thunder.
I am in hopes that this war will be over by next fall for I have got sick of Soldiaring but I have not got onley six months more to stay out hear and then I will have joley times next
winter I want to dance the first Figure with you will you agree to that and the next with Martha I guess I have wrighting as much as you will want to read this time now if you think this is worth answering I shuld like to have youI don't want you to show this to to Harriett for it might make hur feal bad

Carrie: Caroline Ellen Mason of Hinesburgh, VT. M.J. Finney married Caroline Ellen Mason on 6 May 1868 in Huntington, VT.
Orange: Orange A. Baldwin, 1st VT Cavalry, Co. C, long time friend of M.J. Finney & Caroline Mason.
Harriett: Harriet Mason, older sister of Caroline. Orange Baldwin married Harriet Mason on 11 Oct 1865 in Hinesburgh, VT. He died in 1917.
